The accounts of Jesus' young life leave a gap of eighteen years in His New Testament story. Christian tradition suggests that He simply lived in Galilee during that period, while modern scholarship holds that there is little historical information to determine what happened during those years. St. Matthew poses a revealing question: "Is not this the carpenter's son?" to suggest that carpentry had been a family business and Jesus was engaged in it before starting His preaching and ministry.
