Life in Obscurity is a story about the life of a young man living on a station property 1400 klm from the nearest city. It tells of his troubles when his family are faced with having to leave the station; a life and place he had only ever known. After the accidental death of his father and losing his low paid job, he heads for the city to find work. He finds work as a fruit picker and in doing so also finds Minnie; later to become his wife and bare him 4 children. They eventually return to the property and learn to live with the loneliness of outback station life with all its difficulties. The station owners son; David, was always a good friend to Jack and they got on well when reunited. But Jack noticed something different to when they were previously together; David was preoccupied and Jack realized David was questioning his sexual reality. The story takes Jack to becoming manager of another property and for David to find his partner in life; along with a son who is almost his own age. Together, Jack and David go through disaster after disaster but never lose their friendship or the love of the land.
