The Groenendael is the most polyvalent Belgian shepherd dog. He has great fur, long, shaggy and black, he is de best companion dog. His intelligence is very lively and surprising. Professionals consider it a working dog: police dog, watchdogs, military dogs (dispatch rider, transporter of wounded people), rescue dog, guard dog, defense dog, visiting dog, and guide dog. He is very courageous and mobile, and that's what makes him good at personal defense. He is always ready to defend his master energetically, that's why he needs a thorough education like guarding education, but he can also be a faithful friend, a great playmate, and a work and canine sport companion. Always on guard, attentive, tireless, balanced, sensitive, he is very attached to his master and his family. His eyes are always on his master, ready to fulfill his wishes. Immediate obedience is one of the best qualities of the Groenendael. Mr. Nicolas Rose, owner of the "château de Groenendael", in the Sonian forest, south of Brussels, who owned a female called Petite, all black with a white spot in her chest and paws was the first Groenendael breeder. The female Petite mated with Picard of Uccle who was part of the breed of Feluy-Arquennes. From the first puppies of Petite, a male was selected and called Duke of Groenendael. Before choosing a Groenendael, the future master must know that this dog has character, he demands regular walks during which he can gallop without leash if possible, that's why he needs an advanced recall education. His personality requires a balanced master, affectionate, playful, and whose orders are clear. The Groenendael is very sensitive; he needs a calm environment, fixed reference points and a firm education. His biggest flaw is that he can't really be a friend to his peers if not well educated. Regarding his family qualities, he can stay alone after a progressive education, he doesn't destroy things, he likes to travel, he can adapt perfectly, he doesn't bark excessively but can warn very well. However, this dog can become clingy and always look for someone to take care of him, especially females.
