Faced with the break-up of a long-standing love relationship, kindergarten teacher Eliane falls into deep depression accompanied by self-harm. During one night of extreme desperation, she suddenly finds herself transported into another world. There she is stuck in the wintry landscape of a place called The Lake of Love Forlorn, a huge body of water fed by all rejected love. In moments of strong love-sickness, those contributing to its flow can reach the Lake like a refuge - or a source of addiction - or a prison. Frequenting this place, Eliane meets a fascinating stranger named The Wanderer; yet he is not the only person there vying for her attention or offering guidance. When she finds out that characters of yonder parallel world, including the man she has meanwhile fallen in love with, exist in her everyday life, a determined search for her love interest's identity starts. Could he be the shy, unemployed, rather unattractive Jonathan she knows from church, who takes her out on walks? Or rather her boyishly handsome new colleague Sasha who seems to be competent in many areas and offers her his expertise as a counsellor? Yet unexpectedly she meets her ex-partner Lucas again. And then there is also this mysterious homeless man...
