Technical Report from the year 2011 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: A, Atlantic International University (Niger Delta University), course: FEM 633, language: English, abstract: A machine is a device that does useful work in a predictable way according to physical Laws. A machine could be referred to a motor or a generator and in most cases is reversible, therefore electro mechanical energy conversion devices are necessary. Motor and generator which are in the category of continuous energy conversion equipment in an electro mechanical energy conversion uses magnetic medium. With magnetic field more than a million joules can be stored in a cubic meter of air but with an electrostatic medium breakdown of the air limit the storage to few joules. The motoring and generating action is basically a reversible process that is, the same machine can be used as a generator or a motor and shown in fig. 1 Fig. 1: Reversible Process of Energy conversion. Electro-mechanical energy conversion device is a link between an electrical and mechanical system and electromagnetic system needs the presence of natural phenomena which inter-relate electric and magnetic fields on one hand and mechanical force and motion on the other hand.
