While Earth nations slowly come to terms with the dominance of the Space Confederation, not all is harmony and goodwill towards the space travellers. Nations are in turmoil, first from the loss of the USA as a major power, and then by revelations of widespread embezzlement and fraud by national leaders. Amid all this 'noise', the Space Confederation try and focus on developing the next phase of space exploration - the SAT drive in a vehicle large enough to take fifty travellers beyond their solar system, all of this accomplished outside of Space and Time. Mars too, needs development, albeit cautiously. The last thing the travellers want is for life to be found on the planet. And as encounters between Earth and the Space Confederation grow, so does the risk of one encounter going sour and HYPORT - the secret to their propulsion method - being stolen. No, very little is going smoothly for the men and women of the newly formed Space Confederation.
