The expansion of the European Union into space, as well as the ceaseless promotion of scientific space research in general, have always been regarded as imperative targets. The rational exploitation of space is linked to a vast array of sectors on our planet, such as television, telecommunications, financial systems, climate change, health, unemployment, defense, security, energy management, meteorology, monitoring of the atmosphere and the marine environment, environmental protection, management of natural resources, industrial competitiveness, aviation, shipping, railways, agriculture, biotechnology, recycling, forestry, confrontation of disasters, distress signals, rescue operations, civil protection, crises or emergencies, traffic, transport, urban planning and tourism. The aim of this book is to meticulously scrutinize how the European Union has managed to put space at its citizens' service, while, concomitantly, enabling the reader to draw a number of fruitful conclusions regarding the current degree of success, present difficulties and future prospects.
