Josephine Whelan was the victim of paternal abuse for most of her young life in Dublin. A diagnosis of Manic Depression sees the young girl admitted to a psychiatric hospital. After her discharge she suffers the loss of a still-born baby whose father shuns Jo. In a moment of madness Jo abducts the one year old son of Tom and Brenda Doyle, who are visiting the city on a short break from their adoptive home in Sydney. The police are informed and Chief Inspector, John Sparkle is put on the case.
