Ceecie's family have moved again. Whisper was not to be seen when they made the move and Ceecie is heartbroken. Does he love her? Kren asks that about her father. Her mother died in a car accident. Her father tries to stop his pain with whiskey but it will not die and sometimes flies out and hurts her. She misses a lot of school waiting for bruises to heal. Walking home from school Ceecie has a tearful reunion with Whisper and he promptly disappears again only to reappear later with Kren clinging desperately. She fabricates a story for the Ryder's and accepts a ride home. That night Whisper comes for Ceecie and their midnight ride brings them in just as Kren's father is choking her against a wall. Two girls and a horse must run from rage, hide in plain sight, and find the way for love to come home again.
