Working as an odd-job woman amongst the servants of a princess, Eula Rosario has never been anyone important. Taken as part of the princess's retinue to the dinosaur world of Ceres, Rosario is kept busy maintaining the fortress they commandeer. In the arctic conditions outside, there are rumours of strange reptilian creatures the retinue have dubbed lizarrs. When Rosario's friend, Private Derek Stokes, is taken by the lizarrs, she is horrified to learn no rescue operation is planned. On the bottom rung of the class structure, Rosario finds it difficult to find anyone to listen to her pleas. With no other option, Rosario heads out alone into the lizarr-infested snow. As the search for Stokes and the lizarrs progresses, Rosario tries to come to terms not only with the possibility that Stokes may be dead, but also that she might have been in love with him. The investigation does not go as expected, however, as Rosario uncovers far more about the creatures than she believed possible. With a massive lizarr army attacking the fortress, the retinue is forced to band together no matter their difference in rank and class. Private and officer, doctor and butler; all must set aside their social prejudices if any are to survive. In a final push to protect the princess from the savage beasts, heroes emerge from the unlikeliest of places. For true heroism comes not from the measure of one's status, but the courage of one's heart.
