Fleeing an abusive father, thirteen-year-old Kiwa moves to a new house in the countryside with her mother and younger sister Yume. Exploring the house and its surroundings, Kiwa discovers a series of strange or abandoned items - a blouse in the attic or a bracelet by the stream. Each discovery brings a well of sadness within her, along with a hazy white image of a spectral girl. Starting a new school, Kiwa befriends an outcast girl named Amy, who tells Kiwa the house has been abandoned for twenty years. The more Kiwa explores, the deeper she delves into the history of the house and its former occupants. With her well of sadness increasing, she begins to hallucinate and experiences horrific deaths of girls her own age. Terrified she might be going mad, Kiwa is convinced by Amy to hold a séance. Here she shall determine whether the spectral girls are real and hopefully uncover precisely what they want with her family.
