The Egyptian Mystique means that once we could decipher the Rosetta Stone, we in the Western Intellectual Tradition were, or should have been, much impressed with the great, unified, centralized, and enduring Egyptian civilization. This civilization not only offered a unique religion, culture, mythology, magic, and a pharaoh king as representative of, and, divine in person, and great pyramids which still mystify our computer age. What is the mystique, however, is that there had existed a great civilization along the Nile River, in a narrow band on either side of the river for 750 miles, and they had adopted a way to deal with and provide fully for the nation from this great river. Moreover, they had come to see the sun as a cosmic-divine force which, along with the Nile, brought the resources-spiritual and material- to the first nation. The first nation was not based on the Greco-Roman civilizations, nor the Hebraic monotheistic religion because the Egyptians had been civilized and centralized 2000 years before the Hebrews, 2500 years before the Greeks, and over 3000 years before the Romans. Yet, they had flourished economically, culturally, religiously, and spiritually. This was, and is, a great mystery! They were conquered by the Persians, Greeks, and Romans, but maintained their own culture.
