By the Mists of a Rising River by Ross Braught is a story about a fifteen-year-old boy and his twelve-year-old sister who live in a log cabin on the Missouri bank of the Mississippi River in the 1870s. The boy discovers adventure on a keelboat trip and romance on a steamboat. Later in the story, while walking alone through a forest, he must escape robbers and face other perils while delivering a valuable walnut box, the lid of which has a beautiful engraving of a river scene.
