Dr Paola Saraceno is on a quest to be the first research scientist to discover a cure for malaria. She joins MSF to further her research in Africa and is sent to the DRC where she works as a doctor, together with Dr Heath Sutcliffe and Dr James de Waal in the town of Niangara. Their lives are immeasurably affected when the NE of the country becomes embroiled in a civil war. This fast-paced novel looks at the selfless lives of MSF doctors working in a war-torn African country, the wealthy pharmaceutical companies use of a mostly illiterate population as Guinea pigs for the unethical clinical trials of new drugs, the kidnapping of children by drug crazed rebel soldiers, and the innocent populace caught in the crossfire of civil war. It is also a story of unrequited and eternal love. The MSF doctors depicted in this story (and stationed throughout the globe) are the 'angels in a world gone mad'.
