Question of Time Records continues to mould its unique deep psychological techno sound with its second release ‘The Way 2012 / Afternoon Fever’. The label saw its first release, “Change It”, in over a decade back in March, and received support from DJs and blogs across the underground. Now the label digs deeper and harder with a mind-bending hypnotic two tracker from label boss J. Daniel. Lead track ‘The Way 2012’ is a special new remix of QoT’s first ever release. The original of The Way (which is also included on this release) was released on BUSH records back in 1996, and is considered a proper techno classic. It was one of the label’s biggest releases, and whilst the original can probably never be bettered, J. Daniel’s new 2012 remix brings something completely fresh to it. Built around an acidic bassline that pushes you forwards at a blistering pace, the track builds through rolling techno snares and sweeping flange effects. Later strange alien synths take over, adding yet more intensity to the timeless-sounding techno bomb. By the time the first big breakdown hits, the arena is. The final main breakdown is enormous and continues to build and build, and once you’re in it, you’re left wondering, praying, begging for it to punch you in the gut. B side ‘Afternoon Fever’ is a rolling rollercoaster of a house journey, full of energy and suspense. The 8:32 track never lets off the pressure. The groove is twisted and weird, an eerie lead synth collides with a driving, relentless percussion section. The juxtaposition between the two elements causes serious tension. The track’s arrangement is non-conformist, and plays with the dancefloor through a series of mini breakdowns that arrive and explode from nowhere. ‘Afternoon Fever’ is wild and free with a seriously dark edge - like zombies loose in an abandoned hospital, it doesn’t stop until it has you by the neck.
