**Vladimir Ashkenazy**, a formidable pianist prodigy, won second prize in *the International Chopin Piano Competition* in Warsaw (1955), first prize in *the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition* in Brussels (1956), and shared first prize in *the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition* (1962), after which his career took off worldwide.
