The Holland Festival-production of Rage d'Amours, premiered on June 17 2005, was received with great enthusiasm by press and audience. De Volkskrant spoke of 'the revelation of the 2005 Holland Festival', NRC Handelsblad of 'a fascinating and overwhelming double bill together with the McGonagall-Lieder'. 'Every bar of the score of Rage d'Amours permeates a sinister beauty', wrote de Standaard. Rage d'Amours is an essay on passion. It portrays the turbulent relationship between Juana la Loca (Joanna the Insane, 1479-1555) and Philippe le Beau (Philip the Handsome, 1479-1506) and more particularly her unyielding love after Philip's death, when she was not able to part from him and took his embalmed corpse around on nocturnal wanderings through central-Spain.
