1950s western, set in 1866, in which the US government attempts to negotiate a passage through Sioux territory in order to reach gold in the Montana Mountains. Having failed to agree to the Indians' terms, the US cavalry decide to build a road against their wishes and it falls to scout Jim Bridger (Van Heflin) to prevent the outbreak of war.
