Gary Numan | Dead Son Rising (2026 Deluxe Editions)
Dead Son Rising (2011) is the sixteenth solo studio album from Gary Numan, written and produced in collaboration with Numan's long-time collaborator, Ade Fenton. The album is considered by both critics and fans to be one of his strongest, most cohesive, and atmospheric releases of the 21st century.
The concept behind the record stemmed from a series of demos that Numan had recorded for previous projects, but which had not been released. Explaining how the album took shape, he said: “The original ideas that started these songs are now barely visible. It grew into a different animal, something more experimental.”
Heavy, dark, and deeply cinematic – Dead Son Rising is a blend of industrial rock and electronic goth-synth. Due to the powerful synth lines, distorted guitars, and claustrophobic production, critics compared the album to Nine Inch Nails (a band that Numan has had a major influence on and toured with). Many of the tracks are deeply personal and explore problematic relationships and emotional betrayal. Songs such as ‘We Are The Lost’ and the title track ‘Dead Sun Rising’ do, however, draw on a sci-fi fantasy novel that Numan was writing at the time.
Dead Moon Falling (2011) is the companion remix album to Dead Son Rising with mixes curated by Numan, featuring a wide range of artists, including Tim Burgess (Charlatans), Alec Empire (Atari Teenage Riot), Gazelle Twin, and Sonoio (NIN).
