The Burning Pillbox
Patrick G Green
The peaceful village of Addlefield in Norfolk, England wakes up one morning to the sound of an explosion in the field to the north of the village. A man walking his dog arrives at his home opposite the fields and is in a state of panic claiming to have seen a body in the old world war two pillbox, a reinforced concrete structure partially hidden by the hedge and now clouded in smoke as something burns inside, soon extending the flames to the hedgerows and trees beyond. His wife calls the emergency services and soon the village is buzzing with fire fighters and the police. The fire is extinguished but why are there severed human fingers in the grass outside and can the ash inside be the remains of a human? Detective Sergeant Gladys Hopkin investigates.
