"How in the name of the Gods am I supposed to save the world with just four other people?!" That question begins in earnest the tale of Ysala Dirandael, the dark elven Journeyman Merchant, and her four companions: Nathaniel Duran, an Adept of the Dark and dedicated to preserving "the Chosen" at all costs; Gethric Mercassius Saramanian, a swordmaster of superlative skill and a vampire whose powers have been stunted; Tolwyn Tavinson, a young man who never wanted to be a Cleric, but is now on the path to the highest position in the Temple of the Light; and Gorinathilgorinathastes, Thil for short, a dragon of immense knowledge, few draconic attributes which have developed, and almost no experience of the world outside his tribe's lair. The ancient world of Torath-Lyr is at stake and these five quite different people must meet and defeat "The Firstborn," the children of the Elemental Lords who are on their way to becoming the Lords and have armies at their beck and call. The Five have a book, a Codex written by a madman named Vulmithraxian, to help them along the way. As they try to find themselves and grow into their full powers, they learn that armies don't always need to be on the battlefield.
