The Canterbury Tales
Geoffrey Chaucer
It is a collection of twenty-four stories written by the English writer between 1387 and 1400. They were written mostly in verse, although there are two in prose, and are presented as part of a storytelling competition of a group of pilgrims during a trip from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Thomas Becket in the cathedral of that city. The prize is a meal at Southwark's Tabard Tavern upon his return. It is one of the most important works of English literature, and perhaps the best work of the Middle Ages in England.
