I wanted my characters, Sarah and Michael, to be separated by distance, so the story begins with Sarah in Texas and Michael in South Dakota, where he has gone to find a job in the Homestake gold mine. When they reunite in South Dakota, they find themselves moving further and further apart emotionally.
