In a private school in Xiamen, China, a young teacher Amy is found dead. After the autopsy and cremation, her fellow teachers Tina and Sally deliver her ashes to her family in the western mountains. Tina and Sally also reveal to Amy's brother Lao that she was raped and murdered by the school's headmaster Cho. Tina, Sally, and Lao plot revenge against Cho and succeed, an action that throws their lives into chaos. They flee from China. Lao hides out in the highlands of Thailand, joining a gang of drug smugglers. He learns weapons and tactics and leads a small army against rival gangs of Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. Tina and Sally flee to Pattaya to work as prostitutes. They rob an American CIA agent and escape to Malaysia. Later Tina escapes to the US, leaving Sally behind. In the US, Tina begins a steamy romance with a policeman's wife. The jealous husband shadows Tina, so does the CIA agent that she robbed earlier. In addition, a ruthless Chinese party official pursues her. The three men pursue Tina into the Blue Ridges of North Carolina where Tina makes a final stand.
