The culture of the aboriginals of the Lesser Antilles, commonly referred to as the Carib people, was documented in large measure thanks to the French chroniclers of the 17th century. In this book, the author relies on Raymond Breton's "Dictionnaire Caraïbe-François" (1665) to construct an annotated and illustrated glossary of terms attributed to the Caribs. The themes that emerge from this undertaking - the Carib belief system, their understanding of astronomy, the ceremonial practices, the singing and dancing rituals, their customs in relation to navigation, war and anthropophagy, their knowledge of medicinal plants, their ceramic art and body ornaments, the flora and fauna that surrounded them, and their study of climate and the weather - complemented with documents from other chroniclers as well as contemporary authors turn this book into an essential reference for both the specialist and the general public. The author has a Ph. D. in history from the Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe (in San Juan, Puerto Rico), where he serves as faculty. La cultura de los aborígenes de las Antillas Menores, comúnmente llamados Caribes, en gran medida logró documentarse gracias a los cronistas franceses del siglo 17. Teniendo como base una atinada selección del "Dictionnaire Caraïbe-François" (1665) de Raymond Breton, el autor establece un asequible glosario comentado e ilustrado de términos caribes-insulares. Temas como las creencias, la astronomía, las ceremonias, la danza y el canto, la navegación, la guerra y la antropofagia, las plantas medicinales, la cerámica, los adornos corporales, la flora y la fauna, se complementan con los documentos de otros cronistas y de autores contemporáneos y junto a una amplia bibliografía convierten el libro en una esencial referencia para el lector en general y el especialista. El autor posee un Ph. D. en historia del Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe (San Juan, Puerto Rico), donde es parte de la facultad.
