James Soil affectionately calls his mother June, and Aunt Louise's in-house hair salon the "gangsta beauty shop." However, when his mother and Aunt Louise are arrested in a surprise drug raid, James quickly learns that the gangsta beauty shop is a mere façade. The so-called hustlers getting their jerri curls done are drug dealers and abusers. The cigarettes with the unusual smell and the "white stuff" are drugs. Even more damning, James learns his mother and Aunt Louise are having sex with a family doctor to support their prescription drug habits. As a young adult, James is battling with his own inner demons, including his own crack-cocaine addiction, when he is arrested for possession of crack-cocaine. James is sentenced to six months in the Los Angeles County Jail where he makes a vow to himself to not become just another drug or criminal statistic. James walks out of the County Jail where two of his childhood friends are waiting on him. They convince him to enroll at West Los Angeles Junior College where his youthful love of football is reignited. James is determined to right his wrongs and prove to himself and his friends that he is a survivor.
