Carmel is a smart, crafty citizen of small-town America. It falls to him to find a way to avoid the implementation of a new law forbidding the ownership of guns in the USA. Using Tom Sawyer-like ingenuity, he sets out to confound the bureaucrats while he enjoys the company of different girlfriends. By chance, he stumbles onto a cave that is inhabited by the Henhen and a race of giant cannibals. He also draws the attention of serious political powers who want to use him for his growing fame. Carmel knows better. Some of the characters are: Old Luke, a verteran of the Korean War who had direct experiences withthe giant Yeti at the Chosin reservoir. He survived the encounter and has been awaiting their arrival in Hoopersville. Honora O'Boyle, a woman so beautiful that men bark when they see her without her thick make-up and disguises. She is infatuated with Carmel and does everything she can to seduce him. Barbara Murphy, spinster and owner of the local eatery that Carmel likes. She comes into money and flies to Bogota, Colombia for "augmentation" surgery. While there, she does more than receive new breasts and buttocks. Wilbur Flimflam is crabber and fisherman who squirrlled away a fortune in his riverside shack. His lonely, uneventful life is the cause of big changes aroiund the city. Nitah Wiitz, journalist for the NY Times. Her attempts to trap Carmel in a bad light are always frustrated. She becomes the centerpiece in the argument against gun control. THere are many other interesting characters that have fun making tiny Hooper's Island the fun place it is.
