DI Ben Pollock and DS Jake Jacobstein of Glasgow's CID are asked by the pathologist to look into the death, unofficially, of a young schoolteacher who died suddenly in a street near her school in the Camlachie district of the East End of the city. He suspects a drug caused it and not just the simple heart failure that the police surgeon had insisted on putting down as the cause of death. But he has been unable to name any known drug. Another death from a serious assault leads the detectives to link the two cases and Pollock and Jacobstein are given the task of finding the killer.
