Makeda Ama
Sum of My Egg is a compilation of experiences of a life well-lived. Makeda Ama has a way of painting a picture with her words and draws you into the experience. With social justice undertones in "who's gonna take the fall", "the things a boy child got to do just to be", and "young black warrior need not apply", to getting to a place where one is comfortable in their own skin, as in "the scent of myself ", this compilation has something for everyone. In the first two poems, she describes her mother "ms. helen" and "caviar ain't collard greens", pays homage to, her sister in "belinda" and her sister friends in "wilma" and "brown paper bag with a silk lining." Those who have also suffered addiction will relate especially to this poem "sundown at high noon." It is a heartfelt, poignant book.
