Narwhals Are Real... But Are Unicorns Real? is a picture book which follows a narwhal around the globe, visiting other animals on the search for a unicorn. The main character, Nelly the Narwhal, goes on an adventure around the world and is on the search for the rare magical unicorn. Nelly is truly in the search for another creature who also has a single horn on their head. Nelly's mission of finding a friend like her sends her on essentially a wild goose chase until she gets overwhelmed. She eventually realizes she is enough and accepts her uniqueness. Her journey will take the reader around the world to various locations where animals from that region will greet her and point her closer to finding the unicorn. Some locations included are the Arctic Circle, Brazil, Australia, China, and more. A few animals that are also included are Wally the walrus, Evan the eagle, Pete the penguin, Randy the reindeer, and more. The scenes are over two pages for the majority of the story and the dialogue between Nelly and the animal she is speaking to at the moment are short and repetitive. After speaking to each animal, Nelly is pointed to another location until she is told she should get some rest. The following is a dream Nelly is having where she finally meets the unicorn but is told that Nelly is the one true unicorn...of the sea. Nelly accepts this new found identity for herself and her horn sparkles and brightens up at the very end.
