'Between the Body and the Soul' is Kalai's first published work. It is a contemporary exploration of the Kübler-Ross model of grieving within the context of sexual assault. It is comprised of personal essays, poetry, narrative dialogue and personal notes reflecting on the journey to reclaim identity, create self-love and accept personal truth. "I identify as a South African-Indian queer multidisciplinary artist, storyteller and intersectional feminist. Being queer and being a women of colour whilst growing up in such a heteronormative patriarchal society has politicised my body. I wanted to confront what the impact of sexual assault can be without centring the work on violence and I wanted to speak to womxn like me".- Kalai
