It is one generation after the events of "The Ants Go Marching". Jare Addison lives with his family in the shadow of the Tower, in peace-until, when he is twelve years old, he loses his room and is forced to move in with his brother Rand.

Not long afterward, despite all precautions, the yabada appears in town. Nobody knows what the yabada is, or why it has come. But for Jare and his family, the questions are urgent, for the yabada appears to have taken an interest in them, and they cannot avoid a decision.
