It's impossible to write a poetry collection that captures the entire experience of being a teenager in 21st century America. Instead, The Life of American Teenager does a much smaller version of that - it snapshots the life of an American teenager during April and May of 2020. And while the book was conceived before Covid-19 struck the United States, it would be impossible to separate the experiences of being a teenage student from being a girl in the middle of a global pandemic. The entirety of Becky Sabetta's debut poetry collection may not resonate with everyone, but the themes of loneliness, growth and family are themes that all readers will know - no matter how old they are or where they're from.
