The Weekender is the first novel by Diane McDowell. Diane is a Scottish writer who resides in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. The book is a fictional story set in England which threads between present day and childhood through the eyes of the two main characters, Dawn and Joe. Dawn and Joe first meet as youngsters when she visits his village whilst on holiday with her mum. When the holiday is brought to an abrupt end their paths look unlikely to ever cross again. They both tread very different paths into adulthood, marriage and onwards towards middle age. Dawn decides to revisit the village where her childhood holiday romance had blossomed. Her path then crosses unexpectedly again with Joe and dormant feelings are rekindled. Now they find themselves heading on a new course with potential to threaten everything they hold dear. However the outcome is something neither could ever have imagined.
