Reg, a middle aged English academic, happily married with two grown daughters, agrees, with his wife, to help care for a young lad whose mother has died and whose father is finding it difficult to cope. This leads to the forming of a relationship between the man and the boy which colours their lives from then on, thanks partly to circumstance and the influence of Reg's years working in India. This is a work of fiction. None of the characters portrayed resembles a living person but many of the incidents depicted are based on real events.
