Dory Ryan is in the town of St. Dominic, researching the seventeenth century exorcism of a noblewoman, who was the wife of the local baron. Henry, her artist step-cousin, has come with her Within a short time, they meet several townspeople: Julie, the local librarian, married to the high school language teacher; Marie DuMerge, a pianist, and her sister Alice, who run the local souvenir store; the present-day baron, a sexy creature with long blond hair and an attitude; the mayor and his beautiful wife, Esmée; Sabine Paquet, who with the DuMerges' mother, Hélène, was a nun in the local Ursuline convent. Of course, this being a murder mystery, someone dies. And of course, Dory, with the help of Henry, solves it. In the process, Henry and Dory become closer, perhaps closer than they had planned.
