What does a 17-year-old girl do the Summer before her High School Senior year? Maddie Dobbs has been giving this a lot of thought. In fact, she's decided to take a road trip to Nashville, Tennessee. Why? To find her mother who left the family when Maddie was only 2-years-old. All Maddie needs is a car, her Father's permission, a side-kick, and money for the trip. Oh yeah, a clue as to where her Mother is located would be handy, too. Through a stroke of luck, Maddie gets her car. It's a 12-year-old, '69 4-4-2 Oldsmobile with the Rocket engine. However, she doesn't get her Dads permission which might stop a lot of girls. Instead, Maddie gets two side-kicks for the road trip. As for money, Maddie is a daring driver with a powerful car. All she has to do is find some boys along the way who are willing to try and beat her and her 4-4-2. She just has to hope it won't be harder to get them to give up their money than it is to beat them. What Maddie couldn't anticipate was the additional company she'd have on her trip. Following Maddie is the spirit of a soldier who died ten years earlier in Vietnam and a present-day enemy with malice on his mindIt's a lot for a young girl. But Maddie Dobbs is determined to find her Mother, if only to ask why she left...and why she never came back.
