The Wear Boatman
Maisie Raine
The Wear Boatman is a public house, set amongst the terraces running down to the river Wear. Manager Joe Finnan, jovial and friendly, secretly scorns his customers, regarding them as fools and wasters. He sends his daughters, Kath and Meg, to a convent school to become ladies. When Joe acquires a piano and asks an Italian music student to tutor Kath, events are set in motion against the backdrop of The Great War, exploring the effects on the men who went to fight, the communities they left behind, and the courage of the woman who remained to fight their own personal battles.
