The main character, Elam Harnish, nicknamed "Burning Daylight" was the most successful entrepreneur in the Alaska Gold Rush. The main character's story was partially based on the life of Oakland businessman "Borax" Smith. By taking his fortune to the United States, a multitude of money kings deceive him and retrieve it only with the muzzle of his gun. As he embarks on a new life in California, he makes another fortune with undercover means. . . only to find his corrupt life suddenly changed by the love of a woman.. Jack London, (born John Griffith Chaney; January 12, 1876 - November 22, 1916) John Griffith London, was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. A pioneer in the world of magazine trade fiction, he was one of the first writers to become a world celebrity and earn a fortune by writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North" and "Love of Life".
