William Redskin Jr. was quick to accept when family friend Thomas Minturn offered him a job selling wines in San Francisco. The City by the Bay was everything he had hoped it would be...and more. On his first day there he met Mary. But on his second day, he met Marvin Richmond. Marvin's pompous demeanor and assumptions about William's way of life challenged him. A few weeks later Marvin's heinous act made William question whether San Francisco was where he wanted to live. An trip into the San Joaquin Valley and the mountain towns above, including Wawona in the future Yosemite National Park, gives time for William to examine what is most important in his life. The story continues a series about a cross-cultural family in the 19th Century near the future town of Chowchilla. The series as a whole will examine what life for this half Native American, half White family is like as time moves forward. The three predecessors to The Sweet City of San Francisco took us from Gold Rush days to the 1880s. The Sweet City of San Francisco takes place entirely in 1889, setting the stage for the series to move into the 20th century and, eventually, the 21st.
