A British Politician's brother is murdered in Amiens Cathedral with a bayonet through his eye. There are no witnesses and no apparent motive. The politician wants answers and - because his brother was a Catholic Monsignor - none of the authorities want anything to do with it. Not the French Police, the British Army or the Adjutant General's office, and especially not the Church who want it hushed up. So he appeals directly to the British Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig who calls on the man who had previously discovered what everyone in France had failed to find. The man he knew he could trust to get to the truth - Detective Inspector Alan McGill of Scotland Yard. And who he knew - if necessary - would hide it.
