A voyeuristic peep into the life of Lewis, a consummate loner who withdrew when his parents died and other relatives, either moved out of town to find work or emigrated to seek greener pastures. The 70s and 80s saw the height of colour segregation, driving families apart and far away from a country and system they hated. Lewis had his own internal battles to deal with and didn't care much for such people. He spends his days reminiscing and his nights dreaming but without support, will he find the life he's been yearning for. He seeks solace in religion but when this too disappoints him, he withdraws from the church to seek an alternate path. Find out how Lewis deals with his own internal war and whether he triumphs. The question implied by the story is, is struggle just a perception? The book touches on changes in politics, social awareness and spiritual growth and offers an interesting perspective of a loner as fact and fiction weave a fantastic tale of overcoming the self and its limitations. The strangeness of South African politics at a time when it commanded the highest currency in the world forced a worldwide embargo and how it affected the mixed-race population and how they survived sub-economic life.
