Warning to the reader: This is not your typical, "they all lived happily ever after" kid's bedtime story book. If your looking for a fuzzy-wuzzy, duckie and rabbit book with a smiley happy ending, you'll be sadly disappointed. Forewarned, the main character goes mad. Mad as a out-house rat! And there's also a large tater gun in here too! This book takes place in a very different time. Long before the internet, psychoanalysis, and that kind of rot. When men "led lives of quiet desperation", which was a kind, decent, and honorable way to live. Not like today, when all you hear is constant moaning, groaning, and everyones got to express himself. Talk to someone today, and you'll often come away with the distinct feeling you've just been vomited on. It wasn't always like this. Back then, folks were different, better. Back then, a man might have contracted ebola, be slowly eaten away by leprosy, and his wife just ran off with the milk man, and if you'd asked him how he was doing, he'd grin through gritted teeth and say, "Great!" Yep, much better than today. Yep, it's high time we all get back to "lives of quiet desperation", if you ask me. This book tells the tale of a pool man and his desperate fight against a fiendish dust devil, hell bent on destroying his beautiful pool. The ancient story of struggle to keep the pool water clear, with an unfortunate ending. Unfortunate endings are, unfortunately, quite common in this life and kids seem to know this. We're not living in the Hallmark channel, after all. Unfortunate ending and all, kids will enjoy this book. Good hunting, T. O. Greene
