Astonished Haebben found himself a member of the mysterious Solari. He found he had depths he did not know that he had. He also discovered that the universe was much larger than his Dwarf Frame.

Now his first true test. He is given Thanally, the Murkon defector, as a Student. There isn't much he could teach Thanally about the Power. He found himself teaching her about the gentler emotions.

Their next mission involved the Sand Sea, a planet on which a vast Sea of Sand holds sway. The denizens of this planet make Sailing Ships almost like Thanally ones that the Imperium used on Home, three thousand years ago.

They must help Admiral Canaver convince the people of the Sand Sea to join the Imperium before the Murkon could arrive in force to take control.

The Sand Sea picks up where Change of Jobs left off. There's now more at stake than one Murkon Defector. The Sand Sea could very well fall victim to the depredations of the Murkons. This is important to the Imperium because in the Geography of Space the Sand Sea seals a potential invasion point.
