Madison Milano was born in 1998 in South Jersey. She is currently an undergraduate student at Felician University studying Social and Behavioral Sciences. She has been a writer for as long as she can remember, writing her first poems sometime around 3rd grade. In "Poems About my Mother: A Five Year Fight with Who She Made Me", the author takes the time- for the first time in five years, as she says- to feel the things that she has repressed for so long. She discusses what she calls "a five year fight", giving the book it's subtitle, and bringing to light the ways that she has coped with, processed, and grown following the events of her childhood. Poems in this book are marked with the year they were written, showing the five year gap in poems at a point where the author did not write on this subject matter. The timeline gap is representative of a time in which the author could not process these events. This story is one of healing, self-realization, and a representation of an internal struggle to find peace after a lifetime of uncertainty. The author welcomes you to join on this journey and understand the true meaning of fighting with the past. She hopes that sharing this story will empower and encourage readers to use their voice to heal themselves as well as others.
