Peter Canton
Born in Germany as World War II raged, Pete Canton learned to survive the bombing during the war and made the most of the Allied occupation afterward. When he came to America in 1952 he found a nation still bitter toward Germans, but won over the diverse group of kids he met on the tough streets of lower Manhattan. My Characters is Peter Canton's third published book. My Characters is a "storyboard" of the unique people and scenes that comprise the life of Peter Canton. Always willing to push the envelope, Pete often found himself in the company of other risk takers who joined him in memorable adventures. He came by his fun loving nature honestly as the son of a German father whose dual (Mexican) citizenship allowed him to avoid military service under Hitler and roam Europe as a free spirit while others were compelled to take up arms. My Characters includes tales of other family members-like Luftwaffe pilot Uncle Leo-making do in the war years, the young New York pals who taught Pete street smarts, and Air Force comrades like Stinky and Shaky who continued his "education." There are also stories of wives and lovers and a peek inside the back shop workings of the New York Times.
