This book is a stirring critique of human selfishness. The author calls it "selfism" and argues that whether it's personal, social, or political it's an expression of the original sin that has infested the whole world. This selfism is at the heart of all relational problems in the family, the church, the national community, as well as in all international conflicts. The book is grounded on the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity. The author argues that since people are created in the image of God all thinking about human relationships must be based on the divine relationship of mutuality, openness, equality, and love that exists between Father, Son, and Spirit. In other words, the community of God's people is to be marked by altruism. The author's exposition of the biblical materials focuses especially on the love, generosity, and practical kindness that was central to the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. The book presents readers with the challenge to recognize and renounce their own innate selfishness and embark on a life of altruism for all, regardless of gender, race, religion, social status, sexual orientation, health, or wealth, and even for those with whom one does not agree.
