Captain Sheridan McNaughton's father had always said that he was not entirely mortal. Upon returning home from the war to find that his family has been shattered, and his only remaining relative, a ten year old brother is in a catatonic state from the torture visited upon him by the bummers, he sets out to balance the books with those responsible. Using the witcheries that allowed him to not only survive the war, but flourish, he begins to rebuild his life, his fortune, and his home. A chance remark from his brother's physician puts him on the path to discovering some of the origins of his witcheries, and how they can be better used. This leads him deep into the swamps of Bon Secour to the home of the man claiming to be his grandfather. But all is not as it seems, and Sheridan pays for the knowledge he gains with blood and fire. As a giant white swamp painter with a taste for Yankee blood begins to stalk the streets of Mobile, Sheridan becomes embroiled in war that runs far deeper than that recent unpleasantness with the North. Slowly his knowledge of the witchkin grows, and he comes to realize that there is an enemy out there whose only goal is to destroy the McNaughton name, and see him and his family dead. This is the story of the last of the McNaughtons and how their actions would reach into the modern era to a young boy who is reliving his life over again.
