In Man Made Lemons, Jordan Cambridge opens his heart to reveal anguish tinged with warmth and humour that is both fresh and personal yet at the same time highly familiar to each of us. As promised in an anthology in two parts reflecting the bitter sweet nature of life, the book starts with dark moments, as in Spectre and Black Dogs. However, well-written, keen observations sometimes reveal humour in the bitter poems, such as Morning Person and Gluten, dairy, sugar-free. Similarly, there is a sharpness running through the sweet side of the book, as in Losing my mind and Up in the Air, but warmth for life runs through, with uplifting moments epitomised by Light Show and Genius. Man Made Lemons is not an easy read. It will put you through the wringer, reminding you how frustrating, terrifying and painful life can be but ultimately it will leave you rejoicing at just how wonderful life is!
