Historical Sketch And Roster Of The North Carolina Mallett's Battalion Camp Guards
John C Rigdon
Mallett's Battalion was organized by Major Peter Mallett who was later promoted to Colonel. It is sometimes mistakenly referred to as Maletto's Battalion and from that name some have assumed that this was a black unit, but I have found no evidence to support this. Little is known of this Battalion. They apparently acted as camp guards and drill masters at Camp Moore prior to the battle of Kinston and most of the battalion was captured at that battle. This battalion evidently had 6 companies although a few names appear in companies G, H, K, L, and O. Company D may have been formed from the Raleigh area as their captain was from Raleigh. Company D enlisted men from Granville Wake and Frankle Counties.
